Performing Choir is comprised of boys primarily in 5th–12th grades (ages 10 to 18). Membership in this level is by audition or voice hearing. The majority of boys in the Performing Choir have moved through the ranks of the Lyric, Cadet, and Choristers levels. More advanced students with prior experience may be accepted into the Performing Choir directly.
The Performing Choir sings a wide range of music. In addition to sacred music of the masters (works selected on musical artistry and not religious persuasion), Kantorei performs an exciting array of secular selections including folk songs, spirituals, show tunes, and patriotic, pop, and jazz music. Since much of the music is sung in at least four vocal parts with varying levels of complexity and occasionally in a foreign language, certain skills are necessary for acceptance into the Performing Choir.
