Kantorei is pleased to announce that beginning in the 2017-18 performance season, they will be opening up their renowned performance-based music education opportunities to girls in the region.
For over 50 years, Kantorei’s mission has been to represent the finest tradition of boychoirs by offering an outstanding musical and cultural education while providing many opportunities for personal growth. As the musical and community landscape in the Rockford region continues to change, a clear demand has emerged for choral music education and pedagogy, such as offered in Kantorei's 53-year tradition, not only boys, but also for girls.
The benefits of this investment are multi-fold:
The groundwork has already been laid for a mixed choir at the preparatory level, enabling students to advance to separate, all-men and all-women ensembles as their voice matures. In the Preparatory and Lyric choir levels, unchanged voices will be mixed. As voices mature, singers will advance to separate men’s and women’s Performing Choirs. Lyric choristers will occasionally join the men’s Performing Choir to add treble voices. Kantorei’s core identity as an outstanding environment to grow and mature musically and personally will remain intact.
From Kantorei's Artistic Director:
Kantorei is Rockford's choir. In August of last year, I began a dialogue with Rockford, seeking insight into how best to strengthen the bond between the city and her choir. When it comes to community support, there are some things that never change: Recruitment is a process, not an event. Music education is performance-based. Today's boys are tomorrow's citizens. Trying to juggle your children's schedules is like herding cats.
In addition to being reminded of what does not change, I was enlighted by the new things I learned from this ten-month conversation with the community. I learned that in Rockford, there is a demand for choral music education and pedagogy, such as offered in Kantorei's 53-year tradition, for not only boys, but also their sisters.
That is why it is with great excitement that I announce that the 2017-18 program year will feature the launch of Kantorei's newest venture: The Singing Girls of Rockford. We invite all students, boys and girls, to audition to become part of Kantorei, bringing Rockford a tradition of choral excellence and music education for over 50 years.
